About Public Relations

Business to Business Public Relations

The fabled philosopher ‘Anonymous’ is credited with saying, “PR is about everything that you do or say”. This is similar to the definition given by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations. This kind of PR is about reputation management – strategic PR – shaping what people think about you and your business.

Most business to business public relations activity is more tactical rather than strategic. B2B PR is about introducing products or services, demonstrating capability, promoting events, discussing issues and, sometimes, shaping opinion.

Tactical PR needs a strategic framework to ensure message consistency. However, most PR output is aimed at achieving practical goals. These may involve promoting ideas, encouraging the acceptance and use of new products, processes and technology. Showcasing what you do and achieve for your customers.

About the Media

Most traditional business PR was about bridging the communication gap between an organisation and its customers – existing or potential. Most of this communication was achieved by news placement through print and broadcast channels.

Today their are more media choices. Online media, including web sites, e-zines, special interest portals, social networks, blogs, smart phones and podcasts have proliferated. Online public relations is integral to any campaign.

CIPR Definition of PR

“Public relations is about reputation – the result of what you do, what you say and what others say about you. Public relations is the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of earning understanding and support and influencing opinion and behaviour. It is the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics.” ...The Chartered Institute of Public Relations, UK
